Upcoming Internal Medicine Conferences in April

Each semester has a busy stretch of weeks where faculty and fellows connect with health care providers both within the institution and from around the region. Continuing medical education offers presenters and attendees the opportunity to showcase and learn about the latest research, devices, and procedures in a particular subspecialty or field. Internal Medicine is presenting in and hosting a number of terrific offerings.

20th Annual Update in Infectious Diseases

Hosted by the Division of Infectious Diseases, this day-long conference features information on adult immunizations, community-acquired pneumonia, Lyme disease, treating the international traveler, hepatitis C, HIV and other STDs, antibiotic adverse effects, S. aureus, and more. Formats will vary between small-group breakout sessions, panel discussions, and large-group plenary sessions.

The day will begin with a presentation from Bradley Allen, MD, PhD, Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Allen will discuss how the opioid epidemic has affected his state.


CardAdvances20185th Annual Advances in Cardiovascular Diagnosis & Therapy

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is finishing its first half-decade with this conference, which focuses on all things heart. What always makes this unique is that conference organizers solicit presentations from physicians, surgeons, fellows, and nurse practitioners alike for a full range of perspectives. Information on cardiac MRIs, the role of genetic screening, organizing successful lead extraction programs, and alternative site pacing will be on offer.

Annabelle Volgman, MD, FACC, FAHA, Director of the Rush Heart Center for Women and Professor of Internal Medicine at Rush Medical College in Chicago, will discuss cardiovascular disease in women and minority populations.

Genomic2018Precision Genomic Medicine Conference

This one-day conference targets health care professionals and provides an introduction to the integration of genomic data into routine patient management. Presentations from a variety of departments will discuss how genetics and genetic screening has benefited the way they treat patient concerns. Keynote speaker Richard Weinshilboum, MD, directs the Pharmacogenomics Program of the May Center for Individualized Medicine. He will discuss precision medicine and drug response.

This multi-disciplinary conference is sponsored by the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics, the Department of Pathology, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Carver College of Medicine, and the Hardin Medical Library.
