The Department of Internal Medicine would like to introduce our newest members who joined us in July and August. We are pleased to welcome them to the department.
Sue Bodine, PhD – Professor
Endocrinology
Dr. Sue Bodine joined the Division of Endocrinology on July 31 as a Tenured Professor, coming from her previous position as Professor in the College of Biological Sciences and the School of Medicine at UC Davis. Dr. Bodine received her PhD from UCLA, after which she served as a faculty member at UCSD before moving to research and development at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Elixir Pharmaceuticals. Her current research interests are in understanding the mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle size under growth and atrophy conditions, with the long-term objective of developing therapies for the treatment of muscle atrophy. Her research is also examining the health benefits of exercise, and she is a principle investigator in the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Common Fund Consortium. In July, she became Editor-In-Chief for the Journal of Applied Physiology. In her spare time, Dr. Bodine enjoys the outdoors, gardening, and spending time with her two golden retrievers.
Alexandros Briasoulis, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Cardiovascular Medicine
Dr. Alexandros Briasoulis joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor on July 26. Dr. Briasoulis received his MD in 2007, followed by a PhD in 2009, from the University of Athens in Greece. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, and has also completed fellowships in Cardiology at University of Chicago Medical Center and Wayne State University. He trained in Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory support and Heart Transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Briasoulis’s clinical and research interests include mechanical circulatory support, coronary allograft vasculopathy, hypertension, and heart failure outcomes research.
Rohan Garje, MBBS – Clinical Assistant Professor
Hematology, Oncology & Blood and Marrow Transplantation
Dr. Rohan Garje joined the Division of Hematology & Oncology on July 1 as a Clinical Assistant Professor after recently finishing his Hematology & Oncology fellowship here at UIHC. He received his MBBS from Osmania Medical College in India, and completed his medicine residency at Fairview Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio. Dr. Garje’s clinical and research interests focus on genitourinary malignancies. His current research focuses on improving therapeutic options in prostate and kidney cancer and is working on investigator initiated clinical trials. In his spare time, Dr. Garje enjoys photography, traveling, and exploring new places.
Yuya Hagiwara, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
General Internal Medicine
Dr. Yuya Hagiwara joined the Division of General Internal Medicine on July 31 as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director for the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, having previously served as Director of Pre and Post Doctoral Education for Geriatrics & Palliative Care and Director of Educational Development at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Hagiwara received his MD from Yamanashi Medical University in Kofu, Japan, followed by a Family Medicine residency at Michigan State University. He served as a staff physician at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Viborg, South Dakota before completing a post doctoral fellowship in Geriatric Palliative Medicine and a clinical fellowship in Geriatric Medicine, both at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He recently completed a master’s program in Medical Education at University of Southern California. Dr. Hagiwara’s academic interests include research in medical education with a focus on end-of-life communication, goals-of-care discussion, and family-meeting communication skills.
Hye Yeon Jhun, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Dr. Hye Yeon Jhun joined the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology as a Clinical Assistant Professor on July 31 having just completed a Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She received her MD from Inha University in South Korea before completing an Internship at Catholic University Hospital in Seoul and an Internal Medicine Residency at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas. Dr. Jhun’s clinical and research interests are disorders of the esophagus including reflux disease, esophageal dysmotility, and Barrett’s esophagus. For fun, she enjoys traveling, snow skiing, and spending time with her one year old son and her husband, a third-year University of Iowa Cardiology fellow.
Sidakpal Panaich, MBBS – Clinical Assistant Professor
Cardiovascular Medicine
Dr. Sidakpal Panaich joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor on August 14. Dr. Panaich recently completed a fellowship in Advanced Interventional Cardiology/Structural Heart Disease at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Before that, he completed a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Michigan State. Dr. Panaich received his MBBS at Dayanand Medical College & Hospital in Punjab, India, followed by an Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at Wayne State University in Detroit, where he also served as Chief Cardiology Fellow. Dr. Panaich’s clinical interests focus on coronary and transcatheter valvular interventions and his research interests include outcomes of transcatheter valvular therapies. While not at work, Dr. Panaich enjoys sports, exercise, and movies.
Suchith Shetty, MD, MPH – Associate
General Internal Medicine
Dr. Suchith Shetty joined the Division of General Internal Medicine on August 3 as an Associate, having recently served as an Internist at John Farens MD/Griffin Hospital, Derby/Shelton, Connecticut. Dr. Shetty received his MBBS from J.J.M. Medical College in Davangere, India, and his MPH from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He completed his residency in Internal and Preventive Medicine at Griffin Hospital/Yale School of Medicine in Derby, Connecticut. Dr. Shetty’s clinical interests include preventive and general cardiology. His long-standing research interests fall in the general area of clinical cardiology and preventive medicine. In his free time he enjoys playing tennis, running, bicycling, practicing yoga and meditation, riding his motorcycle, and traveling.
Grerk Sutamtewagul, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Hematology, Oncology & Blood and Marrow Transplantation
Dr. Grerk Sutamtewagul joined the Division of Hematology & Oncology as a Clinical Assistant Professor on July 31, having just finished his fellowship at UIHC, where he served as Chief Hematology and Clinical Oncology Fellow in his final year. He received his MD from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand, followed by his Internal Medicine residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock. Dr. Sutamtewagul’s clinical and research interests focus on lymphoma and benign hematology. In his spare time, he cooks varieties of Thai food and enjoys playing keyboards and guitar.
Eric Weatherford, PhD – Associate
Endocrinology
Dr. Eric Weatherford has recently been appointed to the rank of Associate within the Division of Endocrinology, where he had been Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Dale Abel’s lab. Dr. Weatherford received an MS in Zoology from Iowa State University in Ames before coming to the University of Iowa to complete a doctorate in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pharmacology at Iowa, as well as serving as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Integrative Metabolism Program at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute at Lake Nona in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Weatherford’s current research interests include metabolic and endocrine regulation of cardiac hypertrophy and failure. Outside of the lab, he enjoys golfing, hunting, and spending time with family.
