The Department of Internal Medicine would like to introduce our final group of faculty members who joined us in 2020 (start dates in parentheses). We are pleased to welcome them to the department.
Elizabeth C. Berigan, MD – Associate (7/16/20)
Dr. Elizabeth Berigan joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Associate, from private practice at the Internal Medicine Center, PA in Bryan, Texas. Dr. Berigan received her MD from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California.
Muhammad Umar Khalid, MBBS – Associate (10/1/20)
Dr. Muhammad Umar Khalid joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Associate, after completing his Internal Medicine residency at Western Reserve Health Education/Northeast Ohio Medical University in Youngstown, Ohio, where he also served as a Chief Resident. Dr. Khalid received his MBBS from the University of Health Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan. Dr. Khalid’s clinical interests include cardiovascular disease, non-invasive imaging, and cardiovascular interventions. His interests outside the clinic include computer programming, reading, graphics, web design, and sports.
Nicholas T. Kruse, PhD – Research Assistant Professor (6/12/20)
Dr. Nicholas Kruse was recently appointed to the rank of Research Assistant Professor within the Division of Nephrology, from his position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Dr. Diana Jalal’s research laboratory. Dr. Kruse earned his PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Toledo in Ohio, after which he held a Post-doctoral position in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Iowa. His research interests focus on integrative and pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate vascular function in clinical populations. His hobbies include running, fishing, hiking, and spending time with his family.
Bishow Paudel, MBBS – Associate (10/1/20)
Dr. Bishow Paudel joined the Division of General internal Medicine as an Associate from his position as Chief Hospitalist at Sound Physicians, Holy Rosary/SCL Health in Miles City, Montana. Dr. Paudel earned his MBBS degree at Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, including a year as Chief Resident. He completed a year-long Rural Health Fellowship from the National Rural Health Association Policy Institute working on rural health preparedness policy paper updates. He is also an ACP Fellow. Dr. Paudel’s clinical interests include cardiovascular diseases, health care delivery, value based quality care and outcomes; his research focuses on urban, rural, and ethnic disparities and cardiovascular diseases. In his spare time, Dr. Paudel enjoys hiking, skiing, riding his Harley (a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Iowa City, which is looking for Eagles riders). He lives in Coralville with his wife, Kamala.
Nayna Riyat, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor (9/28/20)
Dr. Nayna (Vicky) Riyat joined the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Assistant Professor and as Director of Resident and Medical Student GI Educational Programs. Dr. Riyat received her undergraduate degree in Economics from University of Chicago and her Doctor of Medicine degree from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at St. Louis University in Saint Louis, MO, and her gastroenterology fellowship at University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. She is interested in interventional endoscopy, GI innovation, and medical education. She enjoys running, hiking, and exploring new restaurants and parks in her spare time. She is looking forward to working with everyone!
Christopher Strouse, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor (7/1/20)
Dr. Christopher Strouse comes to the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation from his Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship here. He received his MD from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison, and completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa.
