Hagiwara to develop combined curriculum for geriatrics and palliative care

Yuya Hagiwara, clinical assistant professor of General Internal Medicine and program director of the Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship, received a four-year, $300,000 Geriatrics Academic Career Award, a K01 from Health Resources & Services Administration in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Hagiwara’s proposed project will create a curriculum aimed at teaching non-specialists geriatric pain management and communication skills. His curriculum will include e-learning modules, video clips, and objective structured clinical examinations.

“The growing number of older Americans living with serious and chronic illnesses has driven growth in the field of both Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine,” Hagiwara said. “This project aims to develop an inpatient combined geriatric and palliative care consultation service at the University of Iowa and to provide education to interprofessional teams of providers, focusing on issues specific to older adults.”

As more professionals complete the curriculum, perform research, and produce scholarly work for publication and presentation, Hagiwara hopes University of Iowa Health Care will become a nationally recognized educational leader in the intersection of geriatrics and palliative care.
