One of the strengths of University of Iowa Health Care’s Supportive and Palliative Care program is its multidisciplinary structure, touching every area of the system. Chaplains, music therapists, pharmacists, physicians of many specialties, social workers, nurses, and more all combine their expertise to offer treatment.
This structure also makes the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship special. From year to year, members can come from a variety of specialties to develop skills caring for the unique needs of people with serious illness. This year’s graduates, John Arce, MD, and Daniel Miller, MD, are from family medicine and emergency medicine, respectively.
Fellowship Program Director Yuya Hagiwara, MD, invited members of the care team to join him in wishing these two graduates their congratulations earlier this week. But because of the size of the team, organizers scheduled their arrival in small enough waves to the Atrium Dining Room to ensure social distancing was preserved.
Though no formal presentations were made, the casual nature of the gathering and the clear comfort colleagues felt with each other kept the conversation lively. Stories were shared and future plans were discussed. And because everyone remained shielded or masked, group photos could also take place.
Congratulations to this year’s graduates on finishing in the most instantly recognized year, whenever these photos are seen. Best wishes for the future!
