Recent faculty additions, November-December 2018

The Department of Internal Medicine would like to introduce our newest members who joined in the months of November and December 2018 (start dates in parentheses). We are pleased to welcome them to the department.


carvourmarthaMartha Carvour, MD, PhD – Assistant Professor (11-26-18)

Dr. Martha Carvour joins the Division of Infectious Diseases as an Assistant Professor after completing her fellowship at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Dr. Carvour earned her MD and PhD degrees at the UI Carver College of Medicine and the College of Public Health, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas. Her research focuses on diabetes-related foot ulcers and infections of the skin, muscle, or bone that can result from these ulcers. In her spare time, Dr. Carvour enjoys hiking, baking, and home improvement.


Charis-Donelson~ChristinaChristina Charis-Donelson, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor (12-10-18)

Dr. Christina Charis-Donelson joins the Division of General Internal Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor. Dr. Donelson was born and raised in Iowa, received her MD from the Carver College of Medicine, and pursued her Residency training here as well. During her training she completed international electives in Kenya, Haiti and Peru. She spent the first 10 years of her career in private practice doing traditional inpatient/outpatient patient care. Her clinical and academic interests include primary care, women’s health, rural health, travel medicine, and medical education. Outside of work, Dr. Donelson likes to play tennis, visit the national parks, and make quilts.


Thondapu~VanajaVanaja Thondapu, MBBS – Associate (12-31-18)

Dr. Vanaja Thondapu joined the Division of General Internal Medicine as an Associate from her position as an Ambulatory Care Provider at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa. Dr. Thondapu received her MBBS from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India and went on to complete her Internal Medicine Residency at Huron Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Since completing her training, Dr. Thondapu has worked as both a Hospitalist and an Ambulatory Care Provider, spending most of her career in area hospitals located in both Missouri and Iowa. She will be working alongside our other ambulatory care providers in our Ambulatory Care Clinic at Iowa River Landing (IRL). In her free time, Dr. Thondapu enjoys traveling, reading, and gardening.


Yumul~ KristineKristine Yumul, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor (11-5-18)

Dr. Yumul has joined the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the University of Iowa as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. Dr. Yumul graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore and was a fourth-year Chief Resident in that program. She went on to complete her Cardiovascular Diseases fellowship at the University of Arizona where she served as the Chief Fellow her third year. Thereafter, she did an Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant fellowship at the University of California in San Diego. Dr. Yumul will round on the inpatient consult service and staff the Heart Failure clinic at the VA. At the University, she will round on the inpatient cardiomyopathy consult service and assist with donor calls as well. She enjoys traveling as her family is based in four countries in three different continents. After living in the East Coast, Southwest and the West Coast, she is excited to move to the Midwest and call Iowa City home.
