New faculty additions, July 2017

The Department of Internal Medicine would like to introduce our newest members who joined us in the month of July. We are pleased to welcome them to the department.


Alvarez~PaulinoPaulino Alvarez, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Cardiovascular Medicine

Dr. Paulino Alvarez comes to the Division of Cardiology after completing a Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. He received his M.D. from Universidad René Favaloro in Buenos Aires, Argentina, completed an Internal Medicine Residency in CEMIC Buenos Aires Argentina, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at Methodist Hospital, Weill Cornell University in Houston, Texas. He worked as internal medicine attending in CEMIC and completed a Cardiovascular Medicine Training at Hospital de Clinicas University of Buenos Aires. He also completed a residency as well as a Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital. His clinical interests include heart failure, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. His research interests focus on pharmacotherapy in heart failure, cardiovascular imaging in cardiomyopathy and medical management of patients with mechanical circulatory support. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family and listening music.


DoshiHardikHardik Doshi, MD, MPH– Associate
Cardiovascular Medicine

Dr. Hardik Doshi joins the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as an Associate, having completed fellowships in Cardiovascular Diseases and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology here at UIHC, where he previously served as a hospitalist. He received his MD from M.P. Shah Medical College, Saurashtra University in India and his MPH in Molecular Epidemiology & Public Health from the University of Michigan. He also completed a Medicine residency at Rosalind Franklin University & Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center in Chicago, serving as Chief Resident his final year there. Dr. Doshi’s clinical and research interests include management of patients with complex cardiac arrhythmias and studying mechanisms of aortic stenosis. In his free time, Dr. Doshi enjoys reading, hiking, and visiting new places.



Li~QiuxiaQiuxia (Lisa) Li, PhD – Associate
Cardiovascular Medicine

Dr. Lisa Li has recently been appointed to the rank of Associate within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, where she had been a Postdoctoral Research Scholar. Dr. Li received her doctorate in Physiology from the Fourth Military Medical University in Xi’an, China, followed by three years of postdoctoral training in Immunology at the University of Utah and further postdoctoral training in Cardiovascular Pathophysiology at Iowa. Her current research focuses on the role of endothelial Sirt1 in regulating the development of whole body insulin sensitivity and related mechanisms. In her free time, Dr. Li enjoys hiking in nature.



Murali~AvrvindArvind Murali, MBBS – Clinical Assistant Professor
Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Dr. Arvind Murali comes to the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Assistant Professor, after completing his GI fellowship here at UIHC. He received his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute in India, followed by an Internal Medicine Residency at Cook County John H. Stroger Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. During his GI fellowship, he also received specialized training in Transplant Hepatology. Dr. Murali’s clinical and research interests include pre- and post-liver transplantation outcomes and management including hepatocellular carcinoma, and diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the esophagus. In his spare time he plays soccer and tennis, and enjoys visiting new places.


Pezzulo-AlejandroAlejandro Pezzulo, MD – Assistant Professor
Pulmonary, Critical Care & Occupational Medicine

Dr. Alejandro Pezzulo comes to the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Occupational Medicine after completing his fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine at Iowa, during which he was awarded a prestigious Parker B. Francis (PBF) Fellowship in Pulmonary Research. He received his MD from “Luis Razetti” Medical School, Universidad Central de Venezuela, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at the Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Pezzulo’s clinical interests include critical care, obstructive, and interstitial lung diseases. His research focuses on manipulating cell types within the lungs to restore normal function; he is also developing assays to predict lung disease phenotypes. Outside of the clinic and lab, Dr. Pezzulo enjoys traveling with his wife and organizing medical relief work for his native Venezuela.


Salinas~JorgeJorge Salinas, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Infectious Diseases

Dr. Jorge L. Salinas joins the Division of Infectious Diseases as Hospital Epidemiologist and Clinical Assistant Professor, from his position as Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He received his MD from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru, before moving on for a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an Infectious Diseases fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Salinas’s recent research focuses on infectious diseases surveillance evaluation, and the use of molecular epidemiology for outbreak detection. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with family, traveling, and collecting antique prints.


Soubra~MohamoudMahmoud Soubra, MD – Clinical Assistant Professor
Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Dr. Mahmoud Soubra joins the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology as a Clinical Assistant Professor, having served as a Gastroenterology Fellow at UIHC since 2014. Dr. Soubra earned his MD from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon before completing his Internal Medicine Residency at the Carver College of Medicine. After his residency, Dr. Soubra held a position as a hospitalist at UIHC for three years. His clinical interests include general gastroenterology and complex endoscopic procedures particularly those pertaining to bariatric patients. In his spare time, he enjoys to read, exercise, and travel.
