Use full and correct department and division names.
When listing an affiliation on a manuscript or any other professional document or presentation, make sure to list the full and correct name of a division (or department, college, or group). For example, it’s Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation, not just Hematology-Oncology. Yes, that division name has an ampersand in it. Or Division of Infectious Diseases (plural), not Infectious Disease.
Another common name that gets listed a number of ways is the VA. The full, legal name is currently the Iowa City VA Health Care System. And remember, the VA does not have departments or divisions – it has services.
The payoff to double-checking your listing? It can make your publications easier to find in PubMed and in other databases. This also ensures that divisions and departments get their deserved recognition. This attention to detail is also noticed and appreciated by those reviewing CVs and grant applications.
