Steven R. Lentz, MD, PhD, Hamilton Chair in Hematology and Hematology Section Chief, presented the 2018 Sol Sherry Distinguished Lecture in Thrombosis at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions. In a lecture entitled “Vascular Stress Management: Oxidative Mechanisms in Thrombosis and Stroke,” Dr. Lentz presented an overview of his investigations of reduction oxidation, or redox, a fundamental mechanism of cell regulation that becomes paramount in pathological conditions associated with oxidative stress, such as atherosclerosis and hyperhomocysteinemia.
Dr. Lentz’s basic and translational research has resulted in pioneering work on vascular pathophysiology as well as the mechanisms of redox regulation in the setting of thrombosis and stroke. His research has shown that targeting specific redox reactions may offer the potential to overcome the limitations of current nonspecific antioxidant therapies. Dr. Lentz is the director of the Carver College of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program and the former chair of the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB).
The Sol Sherry Lectureship honors the founder of the AHA Council on Thrombosis. Among his many achievements, Dr. Sherry was one of the first to recognize the threat that thrombosis posed and to organize a national response to it. The lecture is one of three presented annually by the ATVB.
