Chief Resident Introductions

Andrew Johannes, DO

I was born and raised in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating high school, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. I attended medical school at Des Moines University, which generated a sincere interest in internal medicine, as I liked the complexity of the clinical cases and variety of patient presentations. I decided to complete my training at University of Iowa, due to its friendly, academic atmosphere and commitment to residents. After finishing my chief year, I plan on pursuing a career in Gastroenterology/Hepatology.

When not working, I prefer spending time with my nieces and nephews. I am an avid sports fan (particularly of the Green Bay Packers) and enjoy running, hiking, and skiing. I am excited to work with and mentor residents as a chief resident.

Carly Kuehn, MD

I grew up in central Wisconsin and completed both undergraduate and medical School training in Madison, Wisconsin. My family lives in Wisconsin and is only a short drive away, making for fun weekends at Iowa vs Wisconsin football games at either stadium.

I was drawn to Internal Medicine training at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics as it is known to create well-rounded clinicians and has a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere. My experiences in residency at UIHC have inspired my desire to learn and improve our healthcare system. I became involved in Quality Improvement projects as a second-year resident and have enjoyed working with various mentors and presented at both national Society of General Internal Medicine and Society of Hospital Medicine this past year on projects involving telemetry use at UIHC and discharge to skilled facilities from the Iowa City VA Hospitals and Clinics. I will continue working with Quality Improvement as a chief resident in the upcoming year at the VA, looking at telemetry use on the inpatient wards. My interests also include teaching, not only patients, but also medical students and residents. In addition to working on a QI project with the VA, I am excited to help teach quality improvement curriculum for residents.

I have learned of Iowa City’s charms and enjoy living in a well-known writing community and City of Literature. The University attracts many wonderful cultural events such as Jazz Fest in the summer and Literature Week with book readings, and it also has great outdoor activities, such as hiking at nearby Lake MacBride’s trails. The University of Iowa football and basketball games bring a buzz to the city and are some of my favorite weekends or weeknights.

Bryan McConomy, MD

I was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois. I originally had aspirations of attending culinary school while working in a French bakery during high school. However, life happens and I became a unit clerk on a child & adolescent psychiatry unit. This experience introduced me to the world of medicine. I worked as a nurse’s aide during my undergraduate education at Lincoln Land Community College and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Upon finishing my undergraduate degree I married my high school girlfriend and started medical school at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

I completed medical school in 2013, and chose Iowa’s Internal Medicine program for many reasons. Iowa has world-class research in many areas of medicine, a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, and dedication to patient care. Importantly, Iowa City is a great place for my sons Adam & Gareth to grow up. I enjoy all the miles of hilly trails around Iowa City and Coralville to run.

I am excited for the opportunity to be a Chief Resident at Iowa. A chief resident plays a large role in the evolution of a group of medical students into physicians through teaching and role modeling. I hope to be an innovative force in keeping the University of Iowa a great place to become an Internal Medicine physician.

Jared Routh, MD

I was born in Kansas City, Missouri, but grew up mainly in Burlington, Iowa, where my parents still live. I have one sister who lives in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating high school I attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, where I received a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Medical Anthropology in 2009.

My interest in medical school started my freshman year of high school after taking an Honors Biology course. I developed an interest in science, which grew into an interest in medicine. I attended medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine, graduating in 2013. During medical school I was actively involved in the Magis Clinic, a student-run free clinic that operated out of one of the city’s busiest homeless shelters.

My decision to pursue residency in internal medicine was the natural outcome of my interest in creating lasting patient relationships in a specialty that allows for complex clinical decision-making and a diversity of pathophysiology. My decision to come to Iowa was also easy. I was drawn to the people of the program and the care they took to give a larger, academic program a feeling of community.

I look forward to assuming my role of chief resident and working with the incoming interns and current residents. After my chief residency I will pursue a career in Cardiology.

I met my wife Gina during college at Creighton University during my freshman year. We were married my second year of medical school and will celebrate our five-year anniversary this June. Gina will be starting her residency in internal medicine this year in Des Moines at Methodist Hospital. When I am not working I enjoy spending time with my wife and Labrador Retriever, hunting, cycling, skiing, traveling, and spending time at my family’s lake home in Minnesota.
