A Note to the outgoing Chief Residents

Carly, Jared, Bryan, and Andrew:

Congratulations on a year of outstanding accomplishments. I remember my first meeting with all you as a group a little over a year ago. I can confide in you now, my distinct impression of “deer in the headlights” as I conveyed my expectations for your important roles in our Department, but somehow, I had no doubts that you would all exceed my expectations. I have learnt a lot from you about your commitment to your peers and fellow residents, your commitment to rigorous medical education, your commitment to Internal Medicine, your commitment to Iowa and, of course (for some of you), your commitment to stylish shoes. I have enjoyed our conversations each week as we walked together to chair rounds. Although it seemed as small talk, I came to learn not only of your personal aspirations and goals but of your deep passion for your roles as Chief Residents. As you move on to the next phases of your professional lives here and elsewhere I know that you will continue to wave the Hawkeye flag high and to do us proud. Even though some might argue that your greatest accomplishments in the past year might be opening the new resident’s lounge (for which I am sure all of your colleagues in this room will be eternally grateful), or choosing the Backpocket Brewery for the residents’ winter appreciation event, I believe that it will be only recognized perhaps a decade from now at the 10-year reunion of the senior resident class! (No Pressure).
