Welcome Dr. Chou-Long Huang, Incoming Division Director of Nephrology

The Department of Internal Medicine is pleased to announce that, effective April 24, 2017, Chou-Long Huang, MD, PhD, will become Director of the Division of Nephrology. Dr. Huang joins the University of Iowa from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), where he held the Jacob Lemman, MD, Professorship in Calcium Transport and the Ruth W. and Milton P. Levy Sr. Chair in Molecular Nephrology.

Dr. Huang is a returning Hawkeye, completing his residency here in Internal Medicine after he received his medical degree from the Taipei Medical University in Taiwan and his PhD from the Department of Physiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). After his residency at Iowa, Dr. Huang completed two fellowships at UCSF, including a postdoctoral fellowship in their Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He has been a tenured professor at UTSW in the Department of Medicine and the Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research since 2006. His research interests focus on ion channel physiology, biology of the WNK kinase cascade and the anti-aging protein Klotho. Dr. Huang is a member of the American Society for Clinical Research (ASCI) and the Association of American Physicians (AAP).

The Department is deeply grateful to Dr. Rebecca Hegeman for her nearly five years of service as Interim Division Director. Dr. Hegeman’s steady recruitment of new faculty helped maintain the Department’s strong clinical presence, ensuring that the Division of Nephrology would be well-positioned for future success under Dr. Huang’s leadership.
