Upcoming medical education events, Fall 2019

The shift into August has us turning our attention to the last quarter of 2019 and the annual fall Continuing Medical Education events sponsored by Internal Medicine. These one- and two-day-long conferences serve as important connectors between the innovations happening in our clinics and labs and regional providers who can put these tools into practice. We hope that you will investigate and attend the conference that best suits your interests.

As it moves deeper into its third decade of existence, this multi-disciplinary conference still finds ways to improve. Conference organizers from the Department of Internal Medicine and the College of Pharmacy have again partnered with the Iowa Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) to sponsor a research poster session across the lunch hour on the first day. Here is the call for abstracts and here is the form to submit a proposal. (Here is coverage from last year’s SHM meeting and poster session.)

Each year, Progress cycles through five subspecialties and addresses their intersections  between Medicine and Pharmacy. This year, organizers have scheduled two days of deep dives via plenary and breakout sessions into current pressing topics in allergy/immunology, endocrinology, general internal medicine, hematology/oncology, and hospital medicine. Specifics include multiple allergies, insulin pumps, updates in breast cancer and osteoporsis, medical cannabis, and many others.

Program faculty includes speakers from the College of Pharmacy and departments within the Carver College of Medicine including Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Nursing, Psychiatry, and Food & Nutrition Services. This year’s guest speaker is Laura Borgelt, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, Professor and Associate Dean of Administration and Operations, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Aurora, CO.

Both the Iowa Chapter of SHM and the Iowa Chapter of the American College of Physicians will hold their chapter meetings on Thursday evening as well.
