Our residency program has been working to find ways to make sure our interns feel welcome and part of the IntMed family as the newest arrivals. Because many of the traditional activities have been pre-empted by the pandemic, from tailgates to any indoor activities, the Resident Wellness Committee invited interns and their families to City Park for some Saturday evening pizza. Chief Resident Dr. Amanda Heuszel hosted the event.
More than a dozen brought blankets and lawn chairs to help ensure proper distancing, in addition to keeping on face masks, even for the smallest guests. As the sun set over the nearby Iowa River, attendees got the chance to meet the people important to their colleagues, share stories about how life in residency and Iowa City is going, and even toss a football back and forth.
No big speeches or activities were needed. Just the steady, purposeful work of building a community and a team that values each of its members.
