The internationally recognized neurobiologist, Oxford University Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics, and President-Elect of The Physiological Society of the UK will be the Distinguished Guest Speaker of the University of Iowa Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center on Monday and Tuesday, November 25 and 26, 2019.
David J. Paterson, D.Phil, D.Sc and recent Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physiology for The Physiological Society will be co-hosted by the Departments of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Neuroscience and Pharmacology and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute.
His ACRC Seminar entitled “Transcriptional and Signal Transduction Underlying Neuromodulation of Hearth Rhythm” is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26, at 1:00 pm in 283 EMRB (Seebohm Conference Room). He will report novel transcripts from sympathetic stellate ganglia during sympathetic hyperactivity and the neurotransmitter switching coupled to β-adrenergic signaling in sympathetic neurons in pre-hypertensive states.
In another presentation to the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Cardiology Grand Rounds, Paterson will review current concepts and emerging therapies in cardiac arrhythmias that he recently reported in Nature Reviews Cardiology, 2019, June 13. The presentation will take place in conference room 4999 JPP in the Heart and Vascular Center at noon.
Dr. Paterson states that this review will “highlight areas in the field of cardiac autonomic control that we feel show the most promise for clinical translation and areas in which our current range of blunt tools need to be refined to bring about long- term success in treating arrhythmias.”
Dr. Paterson’s extraordinary career long accomplishments as a physician/basic scientist have been recognized with his Carl Ludwig Distinguished Award Lecture for the American Physiological Society and Honorary Fellowships of the Royal Society of New Zealand and the Florey Institute of University of Melbourne as well as an Honorary Professorship at the University of Auckland. He has been a TV-Radio Communications host for the BBC4 TV Documentary ‘Heart v Mind: what makes us human?’ and National Radio NZ: Science programme ‘Heart v Mind.’ He has been Chair of the Education Policy and Standards Committee, University of Oxford.
