Nephrology Fellows Graduation, 6/8/18

Family was front and center at a recent gathering of the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension on the Iowa Memorial Union Terrace. Both in the literal sense as many faculty, fellows, and staff brought welcomed partners and children to the event. But also family in the figurative, but no less meaningful, sense as colleagues greeted each other warmly and got caught up on each other’s lives and pursuits.

They gathered to celebrate the achievements of three fellows. Rayan Alamiry, MD, and Youness Hussein, MD, were introduced by Dr. Lisa Antes, Fellowship Program Director, and briefly described. Dr. Alamiry is pursuing an opportunity in Arizona, and Dr. Hussein will stay on here as a fellow in transplant nephrology. The current transplant fellow, Sadeem Ali, MBBS, will stay into the fall as he finishes his accreditation with Dr. Sarat Kuppachi, who spoke about Dr. Ali’s qualities. Each of them also received a personalized gift along with some other tokens of the division’s appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

The division and Dr. Rebecca Hegeman also took a moment to recognize two departing faculty members, Dr. Satyarth Kulshrestha and Dr. Sarika Deshmukh. Though the former had been gone since last winter, many were as glad for the opportunity to give him one last farewell as they were for the opportunity to say goodbye to Dr. Deshmukh on her literal last day of working at Iowa.

As the sun set behind the trees across the Iowa River, everyone—division members and those they care for—gathered for one last group photo. And then they lingered just a little longer.
