Marx to keynote Quality and Safety Symposium on “Just Culture”

With the 7th Annual Quality and Safety Symposium (QSS) just four months away, David Marx, CEO of Outcome Engenuity, a risk management agency, has been confirmed as a speaker for one of the two keynotes. As the author of the NIH publication “Patient Safety and the ‘Just Culture’: A Primer for Healthcare Executives,” Marx helps apply his five-skill behavioral management model “Just Culture” to prevent and reduce patient harm while they are in a provider’s care.

Marx’s career has focused on preventing human error through the applications of systems engineering and law, using his worldwide-adopted socio-technical probabilistic risk assessment (ST-PRA) to develop the “Just Culture” algorithm. Just Culture is a five-skill model created by Marx that uses coaching to build culture and improve situational outcomes.

Just Culture’s algorithm helps health care workers analyze a situation and determine the harm, outcomes, and breach of procedures caused by an employee’s behavior. The model identifies human error and at-risk or reckless behavior as preventable results through the application of five organization skills: values and expectations, system design, behavioral choices, learning systems and accountability justices.

Using his knowledge of risk management and his experience as an aircraft design engineer at Boeing, Marx has consulted on both the Federal Aviation Administration’s Human Factors Research Program and NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. Furthermore, he served as the principal consultant to NASA in the development of their major mishap investigation process.

Marx will deliver the QSS keynote on Thursday, November 21, at noon in the Medical Alumni Auditorium (E331 GH), during Internal Medicine Grand Rounds, following a number of morning presentations and small-group work as part of the annual CME event. Marx will follow his presentation with a book-signing for all QSS attendees in the nearby Library (SE 324 GH).

QSS will begin November 20 at 3:00 p.m. in the Medical Education Research Facility, with short presentations and an additional keynote, which we will announce soon. That presentation will be followed by the annual QSS poster session. UPDATE: Submit your abstracts here.
