The Department of Internal Medicine and the Division of General Internal Medicine have each taken a turn in the last week or so to show the departing Dr. Gary Rosenthal just how much he has meant to this institution over the years.
Last Wednesday afternoon, dozens of members of the hospital and the college joined together to witness the unveiling of the Gary E. Rosenthal Conference Room, to be used daily by the division he directed for 12 years. Each time they walk past, they will be reminded of just what a debt they owe to Dr. Rosenthal’s steady leadership and vision. Executive Dean Patricia Winokur, MD, offered a few words of thanks and best wishes for Dr. Rosenthal and his wife, Dr. Nancy Rosenthal, as they prepare to move to North Carolina. Department Chair Dr. Dale Abel spoke briefly, presented a few gifts to Dr. Rosenthal, and unveiled the newly named and remodeled conference room and a piece of original art hung inside in his honor.
Thursday evening, it was the Division’s turn to honor Dr. Rosenthal. A couple dozen colleagues gathered at Backpocket Brewery in Coralville to offer their own tributes and a signed LeBron James jersey to maybe the biggest Cavs fan in this state. Dr. Eli Perencevich made the point during his remarks that, with the exception of three or four faculty members, every current faculty member in the Division is there because Dr. Rosenthal recruited them. His legacy and his impact on General Internal Medicine and even the Department as a whole will endure for many years to come.
