In early October, a complement of Internal Medicine faculty, fellows, and residents traveled to Philadelphia for the American College of Gastroenterology’s Annual Scientific Meeting. Like most society meetings, the ACG featured a number of presentations, networking events, and even a photo op with an inflatable colon that would go on to be semi-famous later in the month.
Hawkeyes got more than a chance to be seen with a famous colon at this year’s ACG. They also showcased some of the innovative research and dynamic education taking place in Iowa City. Second-year resident Dr. Devashree Dave received an Outstanding Poster Presenter Award from the conference judges for her case report on clopidogrel-induced hepatotoxicity. Her mentor on this project, Dr. Arvind Murali, cited Dr. Dave’s “excellent clinical and presentation skills” for netting her this win. “We are all very proud,” Dr. Murali said, “of your amazing achievement.”
The ACG also hosts a national GI jeopardy tournament and 133 teams from around the country competed in the preliminary rounds. Third-year fellows Dr. James Vancura and Dr. Nancy Gupta placed in the top five, earning them a spot in the finals held in Philadelphia. The University of Iowa GI Fellows placed third overall, beating Nebraska and Walter Reed in the first round before eventually falling to UC San Diego and Georgetown.
This is the second year in a row Iowa’s GI fellows have competed. Faculty members Dr. Arvind Murali, Dr. Randhir Jesudoss, and Dr. Mariam Naveed served as coaches in the weeks leading up to the competition. The fellows underwent multiple quiz sessions and were assigned reading based on clinical interest. Dr. Gupta covered inflammatory bowel disease and pancreaticobiliary disease, while Dr. Vancura covered general GI and hepatology. Dr. Vancura credited the “great mentoring” from the faculty for his and Dr. Gupta’s strong showing on the national stage.
