Highlights from the 2017 Advances in Diabetes & Obesity Management Symposium

At last year’s inaugural revival of the day-long conference, attendees packed a small room on the edge of the health sciences campus. This year and based on interest from last year’s attendees, conference organizers wanted to expand a bit, holding it in the Medical Alumni Auditorium. Attendees arrived from around the region ready to connect with providers and researchers approaching the dual problems of diabetes and obesity from multiple perspectives.

The morning began with opening comments from conference organizer Dr. Robert Spanheimer, followed by an explanation of bariatric endocscopic therapy from Dr. Mohamed Mokadem. A frank examination of Metformin from Dr. Yumi Imai and some potentially promising tech was assessed by Dr. Eva Tsalikian rounded out the morning. Dr. Spanheimer introduced the midday keynote speaker, Dr. Fatima Stanford, an instructor of medicine and pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

In the afternoon, Dr. Jess Fiedorowicz and Dr. William Sivitz each discussed the intersection of diabetes with psychological and cardiovascular health, respectively. Dr. Linda Snetselaar gave an overview of a variety of nutritional interventions and their effects. Dr. Dale Abel closed the day with an overview of the innovative research being conducted in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center.

The day’s events flew by, but attendees were already expressing interest in returning for next year’s symposium, scheduled for May 18, 2018.
