Heart Failure in the Heartland, 10/12 & 13

The full name for this year was the 9th Annual Heart Failure in the Heartland: Healing Hearts, Changing Lives Symposium, and just as with last year’s symposium, organizers represented as diverse a coalition as the event’s attendees. Faculty from four different departments within the Carver College of Medicine and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics presented to an audience of cardiologists, surgeons, internists, family practitioners, PAs, ARNPs, APNs, and RNs–essentially any health care provider invested in learning the latest advances in heart failure care.

Thursday afternoon began with an overview of the latest HF guidelines from Traci Stewart, Nurse Clinician in the UI Heart & Vascular Center. Dr. Chakradhari Inampudi focused on hemodynamic monitoring. Dr. Mahi Ashwath described how cardiac MRI can be used in diagnosing and monitoring HF. The afternoon closed with updates in the evaluation and treatment of pulmonary hypertension.

Friday was a full day. Morning presentations included recognizing Stage D HF from ARNP Angie Schadler, managing ventricular tachycardia by Dr. Troy Rhodes, and an overview of IV diuretics in the outpatient setting from pharmacist Laura Halder. Dr. Alex Briasoulis and Dr. Osamah Aldoss reviewed cardiac amyloidosis and adult congenital heart disease, respectively, to close out the morning.

Dr. Gregory Ewald, Director of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation Section at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, began the afternoon session with an update on left ventricular assist devices. Dr. Gardar Sigurdsson described the basic pathophysiology and imaging of heart valves in HF. Dr. Jay Bhama and Dr. Phil Horwitz closed the day by discussing both interventional and surgical treatment options in valvular heart disease.

Congratulations to the planning committee and thank you to all who participated and attended this year’s event.
