Jesse Cochran, an undergraduate researcher in the Abel Laboratory, has received a Rex Montgomery Biochemistry Scholarship. This award, given based on academic qualifications, is named in honor of the late Rex Montgomery, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry. Dr. Montgomery served the University of Iowa for decades and in many roles including associate dean of research in the Carver College of Medicine and interim vice president of research for the university.
Mr. Cochran has distinguished himself in a number of ways. He is triple-majoring in Biochemistry, Biology, and Chemistry. He was named as one of this year’s Latham Fellows, which tasks him with a year-long project to improve communication of scientific discoveries to the public. He was a recipient last year of an Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award and just last week was one of the winners in the 52nd Annual Internal Medicine Research Day poster competition for his work on cardiac dysfunction in mitochondrial pyruvate carrier-1 deficient hearts.
