Chauhan Earns AHA Established Investigator Award

Dr. Anil Chauhan, Associate Professor in Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation, has received the prestigious Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association (AHA). This five-year, $400,000 award will fund his project entitled “Novel mechanisms linking thrombosis and inflammation.” Dr. Chauhan will use complementary genetic and pharmacological approaches to determine how integrin αβ91 modulates thrombosis and inflammation. Understanding the mechanism by which this protein modulates harmful blood clotting and inflammation may open new arenas of research to improve the outcomes in patients at risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Chauhan is one of the few scientists nationwide to receive the AHA’s Established Investigator Award this year. This award is typically given to investigators, according to the AHA’s description, “with unusual promise and established records of accomplishments” in cardiovascular science, as well as possessing current national-level funding as a principal investigator on an R01 grant or its equivalent. In addition to Dr. Chauhan’s strong publication record and his funded research, he is also a member on the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Study Section of the NIH’s Center for Scientific Review.
