At the same moment the members of the Internal Medicine Residency Program were celebrating their graduates, across the river and up the hill members of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine were honoring graduates of the four fellowships they oversee: Cardiovascular Disease, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology.
After a pandemic-driven detour last year, the division returned to the Hilton Garden Inn for a third year, complete with a social hour and buffet-style meal. One of many traditions that continued regardless of location was the recognition of outstanding education, research, and clinical care delivered by its members.
Ahmed Zaghloul, MBBCh, and Jin Zhao, MB, PhD, were co-recipients of the Paul and Mary Neuhauser Award, which recognizes an outstanding presentation by a cardiology fellow at Cardiology Grand Rounds. Recent arrival Elias Hanna, MD, received the Lewis E. January Memorial Clinical Teaching Award. Other awards presented that evening included the Dr. Lyle A. and Mabel R. Baker Award, given to a fellow who conducts exceptional research, presented this year to Emmanuel Akintoye, MB, BS. The Dr. George Irving Pesek Humanitarian Award was presented to Leah Engel, RN, MSN. And the Kanu A. Chatterjee Award for Clinical Excellence was awarded to Shubha Deep Roy, MBBS.
Rick Hopson, MD, was the recipient of this year’s Electrophysiology Teaching Award. Here, Hopson is pictured with the graduating EP fellow, Nyanjyoti Kaushik, MBBS, and EP Fellowship Program Director Denice Zingman, MD.
Each year, the division also invites a fellowship graduate to deliver a keynote address to the current graduates. This year’s Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Virend Somers, MD, PhD, currently practicing at Mayo Clinic.
