The University of Iowa Physicians (UIP) Clinical Awards, now in their fifth year, honors members in six different categories. This year, Dr. Gwen Beck, Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine, received the Patient Satisfaction and Service Excellence Award. The UIP selection committee considers a variety of factors for this award, such as patient-completed Press Ganey Satisfaction scores, year over year improvement in scores, as well as specific patient feedback. In nominating Dr. Beck for this award, her Division Director Dr. Richard Hoffman cited “her successful efforts to engage her patients in making health decisions.” Dr. Hoffman also pointed out that her cumulative patient satisfaction scores make Dr. Beck the most highly rated physician in the Department of Internal Medicine. He also included some excerpts from the more than 100 comments Dr. Beck has received:
“She always asks if I have questions. We go through them and she answers them in a way that I understand. Best of all, I feel like we are partners in my care.”
“Dr. Beck is amazing and I am so thrilled to have her as my primary care physician.”
“Dr. Beck always reviews my records thoroughly before my visits, gives me her full attention, and brings up preventative and health maintenance concerns.”
“She’s well-prepared when she enters the room and listens intently, never rushing me through.”
“Gwen was unfamiliar with a med I requested to be prescribed, she did extensive research on it before feeling it was a beneficial med for me and prescribing it.”
“Dr. Beck always makes sure that I understand everything.”
The Iowa River Landing clinic director also received this email from one of Dr. Beck’s patients: “Gwen Beck is absolutely superb. . . . I told Gwen that my encounter should have been videoed as it was perfect. You should be very proud.” We are, indeed. Congratulations, Dr. Beck!
