Bates’ Guide updates to match new knowledge

In a collaboration with physicians from across the country, Richard Hoffman, MD, MPH, has put on his editorial hat again for the publication of the 13th edition of Bates’ Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking. The widely used textbook provides students in any health professional training program a step-by-step guide to performing accurate, efficient, and effective patient interviews and physical examinations. Hoffman also coauthored a new chapter, “Health Maintenance and Screening,” which organizes the various U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations for screening and counseling, and streamlined the chapter “Evaluating Clinical Evidence,” to better help students understand the diagnostic use of history and physical exam, as well as the different types of clinical diagnostic tests. Hoffman had also contributed two chapters to the previous edition.

The 13th edition expands on coverage of special populations, including important approaches for patients who identify as LGBTQ, patients with physical disabilities, and other diverse populations. The text also includes updated chapter structures for quick reference, new photos and illustrations for easier identification of clinical characteristics, and updated reviews of health promotion and counseling. This text is available in standard print format or interactive eBook.
