Announcing the 2022–23 Chief Residents

The following is a statement from Vice Chair for Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director Manish Suneja, MD.

It is with great pride that I announce the 2022–23 Chief Residents for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The Chief Residents are chosen for their leadership skills, moral integrity, and clinical acumen and are the most representative faces of the Internal Medicine Residency Program for the year. The Chief Residency represents the largest investment in leadership made by the Department, but the return on this investment is immeasurable.

We look forward to our Chief Residents serving as teachers, role models, and colleagues to our residents. Please join us in congratulating Ahmed, Tyler, Mackenzie, and Samuel on their success! We look forward to their leadership.

Ahmed Abdelhamid, MD

I am truly humbled to be selected as a Chief Resident for the Internal Medicine program of the University of Iowa. It brings me great honor to practice alongside the brilliant, passionate, and supportive staff that make up this very special program. I am eager to advance our educational curriculum and expand our conferences, building a stronger foundation for medical reasoning for residents and medical students. I am grateful for this unique opportunity to grow as a leader and an educator.

Tyler Bullis, MD

Internal Medicine at Iowa is a unique place to train. It provides high-powered clinical care and a strong academic environment but is also paired with a welcoming environment and a culture of “Iowa Nice.” It is an honor to be selected as a Chief Resident with the opportunity to contribute to this special program. I hope to continue to expand upon our program’s dedication to clinical education and usher in the next class of Iowa residents to continue to move the program forward.

Mackenzie Hines, MD

I am honored to be selected as a Chief Resident for this amazing program. The Internal Medicine program and its people have shaped me into the physician I am today since first starting my clinical experiences in medical school here at Iowa. I am so grateful for everything I have learned and cannot wait to see how this program continues to grow in the years to come! As Chief Resident, I am looking forward to advancing our simulation training and continuing to promote wellness while also building meaningful relationships between residents, which is something that has been difficult over the past year due to the COVID pandemic. Additionally, I am excited to further advance the already excellent medical student and resident education our program provides!

Samuel Zetumer, MD

I am absolutely thrilled to be selected as the Chief Resident of Quality and Safety. This residency has provided me with the rare opportunity to grow into a caring and compassionate resident physician, and one of my goals is to ensure that every resident feels they have the same opportunity. In addition, my hope is to leverage technology to create systems that improve the residency for years to come.
